Smoked clay has recently been gathering popularity in Oaxacan crafts due to the different levels of intensity and the unique "spots" it imprints on the pieces. Unlike black clay which is shaped, rubbed with quartz, sun dried and cooked for up to 24 hours, smoked clay spends relatively less time in the oven, around 8-12 hours giving the pieces a "smoked" only look and making each piece completely distinguishable from the other.
Craftswoman Isabel Martinez from Santa Maria Atzopma hand-crafts these amazing Mezcal 'Jicaras' using the smoke clary technique, she then uses glazin on the inside to seal the pieces in order for them to hold liquid and avoid any Mezcal filtration.
